Are gutter guards worth it?
Under heavy tree cover, yes. They don't eliminate maintenance but they turn a quarterly job into an annual one.
5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
6-inch handles more water and clogs less, and it's the right call on steep or large roof planes. The cost difference is small.
How far should downspouts extend?
At least several feet from the foundation, further on grade that slopes back toward the house. Underground drains are better where practical.
